The Fallen Hero Tribute Bike Project Launches at the Leadville Trail 100

Leadville, CO- August, 8/10/13 2013 – The inaugural Fallen Hero Tribute Bike Project is a program created by the nonprofit Phoenix Patriot Foundation (PPF) to bring awareness to the 16,000 severely wounded U.S. vets that need support.  This year’s bike commemorates fallen hero, Patrick Feeks. Patrick was an avid cyclist and Navy SEAL who was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan. Josh Colley and the staff of the LT100 graciously showcased the bike in the downtown Leadville store, expo, and gave PPF the opportunity to address the race participants. The Leadville race crowd of 2,000 learned about Hero Patrick Feeks, The Fallen Hero Tribute Bike Project and PPF’s veteran focused mission.
The Fallen Hero Tribute Bike Project’s goals are simple; honor a true American hero, and engage the public on how they can get involved. Through the site, visitors can register online for an opportunity to win an amazing bike and support a noble cause. PPF’s goal is that people registering for the Fallen Hero Tribute Bike drawing will also take the time to learn PPF’s mission and help support their programs by making a donation. The Fallen Hero Tribute Bike would not have been possible without generous contributions from:  Felt Bicycles, Shimano, Fox, and Enve Composites.
The Launch of the Fallen Hero Tribute Bike Project successfully generated over $5,000 in donations for PPF programs over the LT100 race weekend.  The goal is to raise $20,000 before the bike is raffled on Veteran’s Day 11/11/13. To enter the online drawing please click, here.

PPF Riders Tackle The Abominable Snowmen...or, the 2012 Julian Death March

Friends, families and Sponsors:

Saturday, 14 Apr 2012 will surely go down as one of the more extreme Julian Death Marches in recent memory. Temperatures skirted freezing point throughout and only briefly pushed the mercury past 41 degrees. With the temperatures better suited to sledding, or skiing, the organizers decided to postpone the start by an hour which allowed for some great photo opportunities to capture our impressive Phoenix Patriot Foundation turnout given the conditions. Representing PPF were Guy McDermott, returning JDM race veteran and PPF Team Captain, along with newcomers Vic Chonka, Dale Blankenship, and Eric Skalski. Braving the elements for reasons wholy unclear to them, our loving support crew of Lu and Maureen Lastra, and Carmen Skalski ensured that riders stayed on course, got fed, and were awesomely encouraged.

As for the race? As these things go, the opening, neutral roll out pelted the riders with snow and hail but rewarded their persistence (foolishness?) with good traction and a neutral vehicle keeping things gentlemanly for the first five miles. Soon enough, the road pitched up hill and we began the ascent of Banner Toll Road. Stringing out the pack and providing much awaited warming of toes, fingers, and faces just in time for a brisk descent down Rodriguez Canyon and into much welcomed and warmer weather conditions. A well-deserved tail wind assisted with the next few miles but unfortunately Dale and Eric would miss the turnaround at Pinyon Mountain Road where Guy had already turned to tackle the long course and where Vic would soon follow. Although Dale and Eric’s race was all but over as they tacked on an additional 9 miles before returning to the course route, Dale was able to demonstrate the true meaning of teamwork as he selflessly took on all 4.5 miles of off-route ‘training’ complete with 20mph headwinds.

Meanwhile back on course, Guy had joined forces with David Sullivan and Bryon Taylor to better tackle the ever-increasing and gusting winds as a pace-line. These three tremendous athletes never relinquished their lead and eventually completed the podium within 25 minutes of one another with Guy improving his 6th place performance of last year to an impressive and hypothermic 3rd. There were three other brave souls who would later follow in their frozen footsteps to complete 2 loops of Oriflame Canyon required for the 79 mile re-route...great job fellas. It is worth noting that the race directors contemplated cutting the second loop due to deteriorating weather and course conditions but they were either too slow on the draw or maybe the riders were faster. For the 26 remaining riders who took on one loop of Oriflame to complete the 65 mile version, Vic would finish an impressive 7th and looked no worse for the wear. Fortunately for the team, I don’t think that Vic nor Guy were among those unfortunate riders who found themselves brought to a complete headwind halt while climbing Oriflame before being tossed off trail into an abundance of rocks, scrub brush, and mud just to get up, rinse, and repeat.

With feeling finally returning to the thawing nubs that are our fingers, we need to to send a special message of thanks to our sponsors. Everyone has dialed in there nutrition with Infinit while Schwalbe, Shimano, Sidi, Canari, DT Swiss, Stan’s No Tubes, and Ride Cyclery/Specialized keep us moving, looking, and feeling the part. To you all, THANK YOU.

On to the next adventure...

-Guy

PPF To Cross English Channel

Phoenix Patriot Foundation (PPF) Teams up with Athena Passage, The Travis Manion Foundation, and The Navy SEAL Foundation for English Channel Swim

San Diego, CA - April 12, 2012 - This July, a diverse team connected to the Navy SEAL community will swim across the English Channel. Based on the concepts of psychological hardiness and resiliency, the purpose of this endeavor is active engagement in shared challenges promoting healing, growth, and well being in the face of the shared sacrifice and loss resulting from service.

The team primarily consists of members from the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) community and includes surviving spouses of fallen SEALs and those wounded in service. One such member is LCDR Dan Cnossen, who was injured while conducting a combat operation in Afghanistan in September of 2010 resulting in the double amputation of his legs. Dan is now on the U.S. Paralympic Biathlon Team and is training for the Olympic Games in So Chi, Russia in 2014.

Navy SEAL and founder of Athena Passage, Brad Rhinelander, stated, “it was a good fit given the 50th anniversary of the SEAL Teams and the tie-in with Normandy where Frogmen first established the reputation of the SEAL Teams during World War II as they cleared the beaches under heavy fire prior to the D- Day invasions” when referring to the historic significance of this swim.

Phoenix Patriot Foundation Mountain Bike Team 12 Hours of Temecula Finale and Season Recap

As the saying goes … all good things must come to an end and following that adage, the PPFMTB team made sure to end this season with a strong showing to cap off what has been an exceedingly successful year. The last race of the season was set to take place under a deluge of cold rain. Throughout the week, the racers stalked the weather reports and, by some good natured luck, the forecast began to reverse; having started out as a disheartening 70% chance of rain on Monday, the forecasted rain thankfully diminished to a 30% chance by race day.

The overall race turnout was still sizable, with a large crowd of racers favoring their odds against the weather. Total attendance of PPFMTB riders, however, was only two, Guy McDermott and Hubert Otlik.  The remainder of the crew was tied up with military deployment and/or training requirements.  The two riders made the better of it and both rode an outstanding race.  The morning of the race, the weather was (mostly) cooperating as a gentle drizzle began to fall half-way through the first lap. It was noticeable, but not uncomfortable. Shortly after the start, Hubert (who was racing in the Men’s 6 hour Open Solo category) decided to spend his day racing in support of Guy, who started the race ranked first in the Men’s Expert 12 hour Solo category going into the series finale. At the start of the third lap, the two teammates had managed to overtake Guy’s closest placed rival and put in a three minute gap. Lap 4 proved to be a decisive turning point as Guy and Hubert pushed the pace on the seemingly endless dam(n) climb. Snaking its way onto the overlooking ridgeline, the view would otherwise be beautiful to take in, had both riders not been cross-eyed and hypoxic from the effort. Lap 5 was once again a memorable one as the early morning drizzle had created a perfectly tacky surface on which you could do no wrong; traction was incredible and both Guy and Hubert rode that lap relishing the traction and speed.

And just as they allowed themselves to comment on how nice the weather had been, Guy and Hubert immediately sensed their folly as the rain returned in earnest and the course quickly turned from an idyllic tacky and flowing trail into a giant vat of mud soup. Lap 6 quickly deteriorated as the rain steadily grew stronger and the light drizzle with imperceptible rain drops turned into a deluge with what seemed like bucket size rain drops descending upon the entire course. As the rain fell, traction began to deteriorate at an exponential rate; rock faces that once provided some degree of traction now felt like sheets of glass that had been smeared with bearing grease. Riders were falling backwards onto the course, where ever there may have been a small puddle, was now a six inch deep front wheel eating mud bog. Visibility on the course quickly vanished as mud splashed onto glasses and into eyes. Pulling into the pits at the end of the sixth lap, Hubert was both relieved and disappointed; relived that he hadn’t been eaten by the giant mud holes that were appearing like small lakes of quicksand all over the course, and disappointed that he was leaving Guy to finish the rest of the race alone, especially with the weather turning. Since Guy’s brain does not understand words like “quit,” “suffer,” or “this is too hard” he rode on for another three hours, until, at the 8 1/2 hour mark, the race director called the race for safety reasons – the rain had made it nearly impossible to complete a lap without going sailing off the trail.

In the end Guy finished his last 12 hour solo race of the year in 1st place with a total of eight laps and Hubert, despite his slower lap times to help out his teammate and captain, earned a well-respected 10th in a competitive, 50 rider deep field.  To top it all off, Guy's victory earned him the title of Southern California's Endurance Champion in the Men's 12 hour Solo Expert division for the 2011 season, while Hubert finished 6th overall in the Men’s 6 hour Solo Open category.

The team now looks forward to their winter training to build the base for next year’s campaign and would like to give all of its sponsors, supporters, friends, and family a huge thank you for their support and encouragement.

See you in 2012!

New PPF MTB Kit Design...which one do you like?

From our friends at Canari Clothing
For some reason the Canari image is not coming out correctly; the design is a wonderful blue, red, and white that is reminiscent (at least to me) of the vintage Martini Racing Porsches .

By our new friend Phillip at Cutaway Clothing
The design that Cutaway came up with is very classic, demure, and (in my opinion) handsome.

So which one do you prefer PPF MTB fans?
